Grand Canyon Helicopters Are Excellent Memorial Day Adventures (Tracy Delvecchio)

There is no better Memorial Day weekend getaway than spending it over the Grand Canyon on a helicopter tour. The holiday falls on Monday, May 27, and plenty of folks will turn it into a 3-day weekend. The Grand Canyon is a popular holiday destination, and chopper tours usually sell out very quickly. I urge you to book now if you decide to take one of these great adventures.

Grand canyon helicopter tours depart from Vegas in Nevada and Tusayan in Arizona, Tusayan is near the South Rim gates. Tour hours are the same on holidays and they begin every hour. Flights out of Tusayan visit the South Rim, while Vegas flights head for Grand Canyon West (a/k/a the West Rim).

Each departure point has some great things to offer.

Chopper Tours Of The South Rim Of The Grand Canyon

Tours to the South Rim can be aerial-only or landing tours. The air tours come in a thirty minute or fifty minute option. Both take off from Grand Canyon National Park Airport at Tusayan. The thirty minute flight takes you to the North Rim and back to the South Rim. The longer option covers the same ground but also takes you to the eastern edge of the canyon so you get to see the beautiful Painted Desert.

There are also two choices in landing tours. One includes the 30-minute flight I mentioned above and adds a terrific Harley motorcycle ride through the National Park. The other combines the flight with an amazing sunset 4x4 ride to the edge of the canyon. Seats are limited, so book quickly if one of these packages interests you.

Las Vegas Helicopter Tours

Choppers that fly from Vegas only go to the West Rim. You can still take a helicopter tour of the South Rim if you are in Las Vegas, you just have to fly to the South Rim first by airplane.

You can choose between landing tours and air-only tours at the West Rim too. One of the best things about West Rim helicopter tours is the fact that this is the only place in the entire Park where choppers can fly below the rim and land on the canyon bottom.

If you don't have much time to spend in the Grand Canyon, the air-only tours are fantastic. On the way to the canyon they pass over sights like Hoover Dam, Lake Mead and Grand Cliffs Wash. Once your chopper arrives, you'll fly over the fabulous Grand Canyon Skywalk (the ?Glass Bridge?) before turning for home.

Landing flights are more comprehensive, and as such, they're my favorites. The tour that lands on the canyon floor and includes a champagne picnic is a terrific pick for the holiday. You descend 3500 feet into the depths of the canyon where the chopper lets you out for the picnic next to the beautiful Colorado River. You can also choose to add a raft ride down the smooth waters of the river.

Another popular landing flight includes VIP access to the world-renowned Glass Bridge. The Skywalk is a huge glass sidewalk that lets you walk out 70 feet past the edge of the canyon rim. At its apex, you'll be standing about 4,000 feet above the bottom with incredible views all around you!

To Summarize

The holiday will be here before you know it. If you are going to be anywhere close, don't miss the opportunity to take a Grand Canyon chopper tour. This is the first holiday of the summer and seats will fill fast. That makes it smart to book your seats at least a week ahead. Lastly, book your tour online as that's the surefire way to get the lowest rates possible.
